When I first arrived in Canada from the Philippines, I faced uncertainty. Navigating a new country, a new culture, and an unfamiliar workforce was overwhelming. I didn’t know where to start, or even where to go. I was eventually introduced to TMC through Manitoba Start and participated in the Youth Work Experience Initiative. Little did I know that this program would change my life in ways I couldn’t have imagined.
TMC provided me my first Canadian work experience but also the tools to build my confidence and resilience. They didn’t just prepare me for employment; they gave me an understanding of Canadian workplace culture, developed my cross-cultural competencies, and helped me build meaningful connections. More importantly, it gave me a strong sense of self-belief that extended beyond my professional life and into my personal growth as well. Through this experience, I was placed at Assiniboine Credit Union, where I still work today, thirteen years later.
One of the most significant aspects of my experience with TMC was the sense of belonging it provided. As a newcomer, I understood the challenges of overcoming systemic barriers to employment. At TMC, I found a community of individuals who shared similar struggles and aspirations. Together, we learned to navigate challenges and embrace opportunities. TMC made me feel that I was not alone in my journey. Despite our diverse backgrounds, we all shared common obstacles, and more importantly, we overcame them together.
The greatest lesson I took away from TMC was resilience—the ability to bounce back and start over, regardless of where you are in life. This mindset not only helped me in my professional journey but also in my personal development. Resilience gave me the strength to learn from mistakes, face challenges head-on, and build a network of like-minded individuals who continue to inspire and support one another.
In 2012, an opportunity arose for me to give back to the organization that had given me so much. I became a member of TMC’s Board of Directors with the goal of contributing my skills, experience, and time to help the organization grow. Seeing firsthand how TMC supports youth, builds resilient communities, and creates meaningful partnerships made me even more passionate about its mission.
Over the years, I have witnessed TMC expand from a single program to multiple initiatives designed to bridge gaps between communities, industries, and individuals. Whether you are a participant, staff member, or board member, TMC ensures that everyone feels valued and part of something bigger.
What truly inspires me is seeing the impact TMC has on its participants. Every graduation, I listen to the success stories of individuals who, like me, once faced uncertainty but now stand tall in their achievements. Their stories remind me of my own journey and reinforce why the work we do at TMC is so important.
Success is not just an individual achievement—it creates a ripple effect. One person’s growth and empowerment can inspire and uplift others, creating a chain reaction of positive change. It is incredibly fulfilling to know that my contributions to TMC help pave the way for more individuals to overcome barriers and thrive.
Anyone considering joining TMC should go for it. TMC is more than just work experience; it is a transformative life experience. It will challenge you, shape you, and ultimately help you become a stronger, more confident individual. As long as you put in the effort, the rewards will be immeasurable.
