Organization and Program History

The Momentum Centre's Youth Work Experience Initiative program was founded through a private company, Emerge Knowledge Design in 2004. The YWEI staff recognized that individualized and meaningful work experience, along with professional development training, is an extremely powerful way to empower youth and to assist them get where they truly want to be. From the start, the program has worked with Aboriginal and New Canadian youth aged 18-30, some of whom have professional qualifications, and has helped create bridges between the two cultures and to the workforce. In 2008, The YWEI consulted Mary Jane's Cooking School about hosting the program and transitioning the program into independence. In December 2010, The Momentum Centre was launched, complete with its own board of former participants who are committed to seeing the work of Youth Work Experience Initiative flourish and grow.

Since 2004 through the YWEI program we have involved over 100 participants and have enjoyed a 92% employment and back to school success rate with 85% ending up employed where they want to be.

A note to funders

We are an excellent return on investment! We have had funding for 88 participants, have been able deliver work experience through maximizing funds to 100 participants, with 92 participants employed and/or going back to school, meaning we are achieving more than employment results than funding spots!
